Where are you from, and what are you currently studying, and at which institution?

I鈥檓 from Laos, and I鈥檓 studying the at TAFE SA. I started my course in July 2024 and will finish in July 2026.

What motivated you to choose Adelaide over other Australian cities for your studies?

Adelaide is peaceful, affordable, and well-planned, with the perfect balance of city life and nature. It offers a high quality of life and a great educational environment, which makes it an ideal place to focus on my studies and future career.

How did you select your course and institution?

I鈥檝e been passionate about environmental and ecological issues since I was 16. Over the years, I鈥檝e joined workshops and programs, and I even initiated two small projects of my own back home. I realised I needed more knowledge, skills and networks to make a real impact. TAFE SA鈥檚 course caught my attention because of its mix of classroom learning and practical fieldwork, with subjects like designing ecological restoration projects and planning river restoration works. It鈥檚 exactly the kind of training I need to implement large-scale conservation projects in the future.

I really value working on real conservation projects that have a direct impact on biodiversity and land restoration. The lecturers are professionals in the field, not just teachers; they鈥檙e passionate about conservation, and that inspires me. They are also supportive and ready to help if you鈥檙e struggling.

A highlight in my course so far has been the hands-on learning. I鈥檝e gained skills in plant and animal identification, seed collection, soil testing, revegetation, and using tools like chainsaws and GPS devices. One big insight was learning that planting trees isn鈥檛 always beneficial unless they鈥檙e native to the region. This challenged everything I thought I knew and showed me how important it is to carefully study ecosystems before taking action.

What鈥檚 your advice for future students?

If you鈥檙e passionate about nature, conservation, and ecosystems, don鈥檛 hesitate to apply.

TAFE SA is the state鈥檚 largest provider of vocational education and training, with qualifications that really prepare you for your career. And if you鈥檙e from a country eligible for the Australia Awards, I strongly encourage you to apply for the scholarship, which covers your expenses and makes studying in Australia possible.
